Clinical Nurses Professional Autonomy

Abstract
The major purpose of this study is to survey professional nursing autonomy of clinical nurses. The subjects consisted of 410 nurses who are working at 4 general hospital in Daegu and Pusan.
The nurses were surveyed by means of July 7 to September 12, 1997.
The results are as follows
1. In the case the items were not weighed, the responce with the highest agreement was ¡°Write nursing orders to increase the frequency of vital signs of a patient whose condition is deteriorating even in the absence of a medical order to increase the frequency of such monitoring¡±. 3.37 points, and the responce with the lowest agreement was ¡°Voice opposition to any medical order to discharge a patient without an opportunity for nursing follow-up if my teaching plan for the patient is not completed¡±. 212 points.
In the case the instrument was scored by weighting items, the responce with the highest agreement was ¡°Institute nursing rounds.¡± 9.70 points, and the responce with the lowest agreement was ¡°Propose changes in my job description to my supervisor in order to develop the position further¡±. 2.13 points.
2. Total score which the subjects perceived professional autonomy is 159.05 points. This score means mid level of professinal autonomy, and the 94.1% scored mid level of professinal autonomy which range from 121 to 180.
3. The relationship between general characteristics and the perception of professional autonomy showed a significant difference in regard to the age, the marital status, educatioal level, the period of nursing career and the state of position.
The score of professional autonomy by age was highest 41 years old or more, while the lowest was for 26-30 years old. The score of professional autonomy of a married nurse was higher than an unmarried. The score of professional autonomy by the period of nursing career was highest 9 years or more, the lowest was for 3-6 years. Also, the higher the educational level and the state of position, the higher the score of professional autonomy.
But there were no any significant difference in regard to the religion and the field of work.
